Medical School Tuckered Me Out! Go figure!

I can officially say that I am exhausted and need sleep in the worst way. In fact, I might fall asleep right now writing this.

Yesterday I studied until 1AM and then was up just after 7 in the morning to go get groceries because, go figure, I need to eat. And to eat I need food, so off to Walmart I went. Then I studied all day until right now. I just took a hot shower and am lying in bed getting ready to listen to one more lecture as I drift off to la-la land.

Sometimes when I am this tired and stressed I have to remind myself that this is going to be worth it. Especially when I save somebody's life!

BUTT IT ITCHES

The pinworm is a parasite
That makes a journey every night,
From the intestine where it resides
To lay its eggs on the outside.

The usual symptom is an itchy bottom
Though in the appendix it can cause a problem.
It generally resides in tiny tots,
But can infect both moms and pops.

Its thin walled eggs float in the air
So they can end up anywhere.
So if tonight you start to squirm,
remember it might be this worm.

But, this nematode’s easy to diagnose
By affixing scotch tape to the host;
Then examining the microscopic slide
For eggs that are flatter on one side.

So if you have him, don’t be embarrassed
Anyone can have Enterobius vermicularis.

Only in medical school would this poem be so funny!!!!

Ice Storm 2010

It is official that I have survived the Ice Storm of 2010! lol Actually it has been quite a hectic time here. We were blessed with an ice storm all day yesterday and the previous night which left us and surrounding areas with up to an inch of ice. School was cancelled yesterday which, although sounded like a good idea at the time, really turned out to cause a bunch of stress. We had a microbiology exam scheduled for Friday and the administration had to make a decision about what they were going to do with the lost lectures and the exam. Earlier in the day the registrar decided that it would be fine to give us 7 hours of lecture today and then have our exam tomorrow morning at 8AM. Then the course coordinators decided that this was not fair and they decided to re-schedule the re-schedule to Monday morning at 6:30AM!! At least now I get to study all weekend and kick micro in the butt!! (hopefully)

The remaining ice that was left everywhere is actually beautiful to look at, just not pretty to drive / walk in. This morning took 10 minutes to walk down our 'drive-way' from the apartment and across the street. It was like skating! Too bad wearing boots doesn't create graceful flow across the ice! So I am now going to go home a (rather, SKATE home) take a much needed and well deserved nap, then study until early evening then take the rest of the night off before I start yet another round of studying for micro and physiology and physical diagnosis, and.....the list doesn't end.

Bye from a winter / icy wonderland!!!

study study study

....and study some more.

That is all I have been doing is...STUDYING!

Not that I mind it, but my brain is actually starting to hurt. I am cramming massive amounts of physiology and microbiology into my head. Right now I am needing a break and the people on Facebook aren't changing their status' fast enough for me :) So I decided to write on here.

On Friday I was trained to be an interviewer. Man that was fun! I felt so professional and important (even though I am at the bottom of the pecking order in the medical field!) So that was exciting. Then on Friday a bunch of us decided to go to the Family Practice Chapter evening "dinner". Although they didn't give us dinner, instead we got "heavy appetizers", we still had a fun time. Then we went out to have something to eat afterwards. That was my fun Friday. While Saturday and Sunday were filled with studying. Now I am trying to finish off the last of the lectures I need to finish before I can head off to bed. Hopefully it won't be too late. So, I should stop writing and go learn a thing or two about neuronal transmission!

I Learned Doctor Stuff Today :)

I learned doctor stuff today! Yay!

Actually the major things that I learned (besides massive amounts of microbiology) are extremely exciting....today I learned how to hold a stethescope (properly) and, get this, take a history on a patient. How neat is that?!? I am probably over-excited but I think that learning things that I will do when I am a doctor is incredibly interesting and refreshing compared to the hum-drum studying hours upon hours routine. Yay.

Well, enough procrastinating....I should get back to my microbiology studying since I have an exam tomorrow morning at 8AM. I will definitely be glad when this exam is over since I don't love studying bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa!

Nightmares About Helminths

So tonight I, quite possibly, could have nightmares about helminths. I let my roommate know that if I wake up screaming this is the reason. If you don't know what a Helminth is let me show you a picture:

Ugh. I was eating yogurt as I learned this information and had to put it away because I was feeling nauseous. It is seriously disturbing that something up to 50 feet long could live inside ones intestines. Nothing with a mouth and anus should ever, ever, EVER live inside another human being. EVER. It seriously creeps me out.

Now, I have killed my microbiology brain capacity for today, so I might fix a certain problem; my nails are naked and need some colour! :)

Off to fix this problem, listen to another lecture, then hit the sac while I get to look forward to yet another week of medical school.

Oh Where Did I Chose To Go????

....a very, very COLD and SNOWY place:

I tell ya, when I came here everybody mentioned how terrible the winters were, and I didn't believe them....until it actually came! Man, it is really really cold and we have lots and lots of snow. I don't love being freezing all of the time, but this morning was so pretty. I was getting ready to come home from school and the snow was beautiful. I have never seen anything like it. It was extremely sunny with a bright blue sky, but the snow was being blown off the roof of the buildings by the strong winds. This made the tiny little snow crystals to fill the air. It looked like everywhere outside was full of sparkles by the way the sun was hitting the snow in the air. It was absolutely magical and beautiful. It is the moments like these that really make me appreciate just how beautiful things can be. I don't think that this description did it justice, but if you have some idea of what it was like; I was successful in my description.

Today was, all in all, an unproductive day (study-wise). I just dabbled in a few subjects. But look out because tomorrow I am going to suck back some major information. On a fun note, I went over to a friend's house today and had dinner with two of my classmates and then watched a movie. It was really nice to get out and socialize with two really nice people. Hopefully we will be able to do more things this semester together. It was great to not study for the evening, but now I've got a lot of work to do so that I can eliminate some stress when things start to get hairy.

Until next time,

Me

12 Hours of Studying *sighs*

Today I put in a whole 12 hours of studying. I got a lot done and now my brain is fried and I am going to get the heck out of this school and go back to the apartment, take a nice hot shower, and hit the sac.

In addition to my 12 hours of studying, I also attended two hours of lecture this morning. Talk about a busy day. I feel like I got through a lot of information, but I will need to review it again to really feel as if I have mastered it. Frankly, some of this microbiology is painful to shove into my head. I find it hard to imagine that knowing how bacteria undergo sexual reproduction is extremely clinically relevant. But every physician has to learn this and I guess it's all part of the game called "medicine".

I have something exciting to look forward to though! Today, on my lunch hour, I attended training because I am going to be an interviewer this upcoming semester and next year. How neat is that?!? I get to read the applicants' files, ask them questions, and say whether or not I think that they should be accepted into my medical school. I really think it will be fun to do! It will be great to see another perspective with respect to interviews. According to one of the administrators, the most beneficial thing to me, as a medical student, is that I am going to get a lot of experience at interviewing, seeing the other side as an interviewer, and see what and what not to do during an interview. This will be extremely helpful for me when I start interviewing for my residencies in 3 years! It seems so far away, yet, if time continues to fly as fast as it is now....in a blink of an eye I'll be applying to residencies and anticipating my graduation as a physician. How neat!

Well, I basically can't bear to sit here for another minute (I've parked my butt on this spot since 5:00PM) and I'm going home.

Second Semester Has Come :)

I made it back to school all safe and sound. I am totally glad that leaving home is done. I absolutely loved every minute at home; but saying good-bye and actually leaving was one of the hardest things I had to do. Even though I will be home in 11 weeks, I HATE saying good-bye. Blah! But I am all good now :)

Well, I started my second semester of medical school today (well technically yesterday, but this still counts as yesterday for me).

I still have a hard time actually believing that I am already done a full semester of medical school. It seems like just yesterday that I was studying physics and chemistry for the sole reason of getting into medical school. Now I am here, studying and learning everything I wished I could have been learning during my undergrad times. It is nothing short of an amazing opportunity; to study exactly what I want!!!

This semester seems pretty darn interesting. I am most looking forward to my Physical Diagnosis class in which I get to learn how to examine every part of the body. Basically I get to learn how to do a complete physical. I learn most of the examination techniques on fellow classmates during weekly labs, while other 'certain' examinations are performed on mannequins. Next year we learn how to do these exams on paid (hopefully EXTREMELY well) nurses from the local hospital.

It was nice to see all of my fellow med students again. There are some pretty great people here in the program! I am continuously amazed at the general 'niceness' of the people here. There are some few exceptions of which I will not go into more detail.

On a lighter note, I am the QUEEN procrastination! Who knew that doing laundry could be so fun?!!! Hahaha, honestly, I think that I did more laundry than school work today! Ah well, tomorrow will most definitely be more productive. Well I am off to bed now because I am totally convinced that my maxillary sinuses are going to explode inside my face!
